Overall purpose of Role:

To ensure and maintain compliance with environmental legislation and help to measure and reduce the company's carbon footprint to achieve the company’s net zero ambitions. Integrating environmental awareness and compliance into all aspects of the North British business from distillation to maturation.

Environmental sustainability touches all aspects of a business, whether it's the ingredients sourced, process innovation in manufacturing operations, or how products are delivered to customers. The Environmental Sustainability Manager will make a vital contribution to helping the North British Distillery meet its short and long term environmental goals including Net Zero goal in Distillery and Maturation operations. Assisting in shaping and driving many of the initiatives that form part of the overall environmental sustainability strategy, and holding the business and colleagues accountable for delivery.

The Environmental Sustainability Manager will provide direction, support and advice across the organisation on developing and implementing all aspects of the business’s sustainable environment agenda. Reporting into the Site Director at Edinburgh, but also supporting the Muirhall team as well, an approximate 80%:20% split in time. Interacting with all key members of the Senior Leadership team to ensure the business develops, delivers and communicates strong environmental sustainability credentials that support the business strategy both internally and externally.

This can be an immensely rewarding role, where the role holder can directly influence the scope and agenda of their work.

Background:

An experienced and engaging manager passionate about the environment and sustainability, with experience in developing Net Zero Programmes. With a keen interest in how to integrate environmental awareness and compliance into all aspects of the North British business from distillation to maturation.

Skills & Experience:

Successfully leading and delivering an Environmental Strategy and the programmes and initiatives that form part of it, demands both heart and in-depth critical analysis:

  • A genuine passion for environmental sustainability and the drive to deliver real, positive change.
  • Experience working in fields relating to environmental sustainability, with a solid understanding of the landscape and challenges, preferably within a PPC permitted beverages business.
  • Highly organised, self-motivated with a willingness to learn and take on new challenges and interpret the implications for the business.
  • Highly analytical and comfortable handling and interpreting large amounts of data to develop data-driven environmental programmes.
  • Advanced communication skills, presentation skills and report writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex, technical and science-based information in a clear and understandable way.
  • A passion for building knowledge. Environmental sustainability is a fast moving subject therefore the ability to proactively build knowledge through constant research, reading and study, to stay ahead of industry updates, opportunities and upcoming legislative environment is vital.
  • Experienced project manager

Technical Experience

  • A degree in Environmental sciences or management, environmental engineering, or associated subjects such as ecology, biosciences and earth sciences
  • Minimum of 5 years practical experience in a Part 1a PPC permitted industry (ideally distilling, brewing or similar)
  • Experience in managing an ISO14001 certified EMS
  • Experience in managing PPC monitoring programmes including noise, odour and ground conditions
  • Ideally Practitioner Membership of IEMA (PIEMA)
  • Skilled in developing and delivering awareness training programmes
  • Proven track record in developing Net Zero programmes

Main Responsibilities:

1. Working as part of a team to ensure that all activities on site are carried out in accordance with the relevant work instruction, adhering to the necessary Company health, safety and environmental requirements and complying with all regulatory current legislation to maintain a safe working environment for all employees.

2. Maintaining awareness of the regulatory and Company standards that apply for the role such as HMRC, COMAH and H&S. COMAH specific – Understand and act in accordance with the Site Emergency Response Plan in the event of an evacuation or major incident, and regularly participate in COMAH improvement activity.

3. Liaise with key stakeholders including environmental service providers to ensure that the site PPC permit conditions are compliant and effectively managed.

4. Monitor the environmental performance against internal and external compliance targets.

5. Lead the successful delivery of the North British Distillery environmental strategy which may include establishing environmental and energy management systems, working towards certification to ISO14001 and 50001.

6. Support the Senior Management Team to develop objectives and targets to meet the company’s goals.

7. Report the environmental performance to key stakeholders both within and outwith the organisation including regulatory bodies as required.

8. Support the development of programmes and projects to help meet the company’s net zero ambition and other long term sustainability goals.

9. Create new strategies and action plans to identify opportunities to build value propositions and develop environmental sustainability across the business. Plan, manage and deliver internal site audits to monitor progress and to identify opportunities for improvement.

10. Lead the implementation of environmental practices and provide advice, guidance, and encouragement to ensure environmental sustainability is at the heart of all business decisions and actions.

11. Promote environmental sustainable practices and awareness of climate change, and the vital role the food and drink industry have in tackling global warming.

12. Lead and support environmental discussions with clients and regulators.

13. Contribute to managing environmental sustainability action plans by monitoring performance, issues, and progress.

14. Develop KPI measures and regular reporting of initiatives. Deliver regular presentations on progress.

15. Run training programmes to colleagues across the businesses raising awareness about environmental issues, and the contribution each colleague can make.

16. Build strategic relationships with key stakeholders across the business.

17. Monitor new and emerging environmental legislation to understand the implications for the business, and to ensure the business complies.

18. Guide the organisation through the three stages of environmental sustainability; compliance, efficiency and innovation.
