Job description

Position: Head of Project Engineering

Location: Edinburgh

Reports to: Site Director

Overall purpose of Role:

Senior leadership of the Project Engineering team and function in Edinburgh. Lead the team to develop, maintain and deliver holistic multi year capex plans for the site and provide technical expertise and support to develop and optimise processes, while maintaining all relevant regulatory requirements. Ensuring strong teamwork, collaboration, continuous improvement and change management is in place across the team, to deliver projects and new technology on time while still remaining competitive.

Skills & Experience:

Background

Several years of senior leadership experience of large teams in a manufacturing/FMCG unionised environment. Multi industry experience is desirable.

Development and delivery of multiple large scale end-to-end investment programs and successful change management is essential.

Experience of working in a highly regulated environment, like the Scotch Whisky industry, is highly-desirable.

Successful experience of tendering and management of contractors to deliver projects safely/compliantly, on-time and cost effectively.

Technical Experience

  • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline, chartered engineer preferred.
  • Multi-discipline experience or understanding to ensure successul holistic project outcomes.
  • Formal Management Qualification and/or several years experience of management in manufacturing, FMCG, oil & gas or chemical environment.
  • Qualified project management professional.
  • Intermediate PC Skills – microsoft project, excel, word, PowerPoint, and other relevant software.

Leadership

  • Experience in a senior leadership role, with a focus on leading, developing, inspiring & motivating direct reports and large teams.
  • Ability to lead in an environment of constant change and provide leadership support as required for a 24/7 production site.

Health, Safety & Environment

  • NEBOSH Certificate (or equivalent) – or ability to demonstrate through significant working experience in a similar environment.
  • Trained, competent and experienced in Permit to Work systems, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Working experience of maintaining all licence to operate conditions through project delivery and other regulatory requirements in an ISO 9001:2000 certified business.

Continuous Improvement

  • Solid demonstrable knowledge of continuous improvement within a distillery, manufacturing or FMCG environment.
  • Working experience in a lean six-sigma facility would be an advantage.

Finance

  • Cost sensitive with a commercial mind-set, with experience of budget management and accountability.

Main Responsibilities:

1. To participate and support the Edinburgh Leadership Team in forward planning and effective organisation of ongoing activities within the business.

2. Maintaining standards and team awareness of the regulatory and Company standards that apply to the role such as

Health & Safety, Environment, HMRC, COMAH, FEMAS, etc. (COMAH specific - Understand and act in accordance with the Site Emergency Response Plan in the event of an evacuation or major incident, and regularly participate in COMAH improvement activities).

3. Be part of the site duty/silver-responder rota and ensure adequate leadership & support for a 24/7 operational site as required.

4. Ensuring a high degree of technical understanding of the unit operations of the production process.

5. Developing processes with a view to continually optimise, striving to reduce waste and effluent, improve energy efficiency and achieve the greatest yield and quality.

6. Ensure relevant technical standards and approvals are in place. Updating and maintaining all relevant technical information and governance (eg. plant manuals and drawings, all relevant technical information and governance, as well as project commissioning and handovers, etc).

7. Provision of effective line management to the team and provide support as required in order to ensure the successful delivery of the department’s plan.

8. Management and co-ordination of departmental work-loads and employee development, taking corrective measures where required and inspiring excellent performance.

9. Coordinating all project management from conception to completion by piloting, monitoring, testing and implementing any process developments.

10. Monitoring technical innovations for potential use in the production process, whilst also maintaining awareness of competitors’ processes and stakeholder requirements (eg Sustainability).

11. Working with relevant industry bodies to share knowledge / best practice and assist with the upkeep of our industry standards as required.

12. To carry out any other tasks that will from time to time be allocated by the Site Director on an ad hoc or continuing basis, commensurate with the general level of responsibility of the post.

13. Any other duties that may reasonably be required in line with your contractual role.
