Shift Manager, Feeds Plant - Edinburgh

We have an excellent opportunity for a Shift Manager in our Feeds Plant operation.  This will be a permanent, full time role based at our Edinburgh site.  This position will involve carrying out duties to safe and legally compliant standards, aiding in the efficient operation of the Company. This will be working 12 hours on a 4 on, 4 off shift pattern, alternating between sets of days and nights.

The Primary focus of the Shift Manager role is to lead, support and coordinate the Feeds Plant shift team to work together safely and efficiently to deliver the budgeted performance in accordance with an agreed weekly plan, controlling costs to, or better than, budget values.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring the safe execution of all production, maintenance and engineering project activity occurring within their assigned process areas of responsibility when they are on shift.
  • Ensuring routine manufacturing tasks are undertaken in accordance with Company H&S policies.
  • Issue Permits to Work for certain activities, ensuring an appropriate risk assessment and that a method statement has been approved for the task and is followed throughout the duration of execution.
  • Responsible for effective communication with all personnel, (employees, and contractors), within the Feeds Plant relating to planned and unplanned work in the department.
  • Provide leadership to the Feeds Plant Shift teams, developing a culture, and implementing practices, that inspire all employees to achieve their full potential.
  • Carry out all aspects of people management for their team including (but not restricted to) absence management, performance management (carrying out annual Performance Focus Reviews) and investigation / disciplinary if required.
  • Provide visibility and understanding of the production plan and current performance, inspiring great day-to-day operational performance, through planning and prioritising of workload and personal development opportunities for all members of the shift team.
  • Have a solid technical understanding of the manufacturing process within their area of responsibility and be expected to monitor and review, with their team members, key process parameters on a shift by shift basis ensuring the process is optimised.

Requirements for this role include:   

  • Management experience in a manufacturing or FMCG environment
  • IOSH Managing Safely
  • Demonstrable experience in leading, developing, performance managing and motivating teams, as well as direct reports
  • Institute of Leadership and Management qualification or relevant degree in science or engineering
  • Intermediate PC Skills: Formula and graphs in Excel, import photographs in PowerPoint, high standard of document production and report writing
  • Trained, competent and experienced in Permit to Work systems, risk assessments and method statements
  • Competent user of electronic maintenance management systems
  • Approachable, enthusiastic, proactive
  • Demonstrated ability to performance manage direct reports both positive and negative if required including 1-2-1’s, absence management etc.
  • Ability to achieve targets under pressure whilst managing conflicting priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely and effectively with internal and external contacts
