Utilities and Energy Engineer - Edinburgh

We currently have an excellent opportunity for a Utilities and Energy Engineer to join our Manufacturing department in 2022. This will be a permanent, full-time role based at our Edinburgh Distillery. 

Overall purpose of Role:

Assist the Company by ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of utilities equipment on the Distillery site. Support Production Departments with Energy monitoring and usage reduction measures. Utilities Equipment includes:

  • Site water supplies (towns and canal)
  • Electricity supply and distribution up to and including transformers
  • Natural gas supply and on-site pressure regulation
  • Steam raising and supply up to the boiler house header
  • Compressed air generation up to air receiver
  • CO2 collection, processing and storage
  • AD, WTP, Bio Gas Engine and Waste Heat Boiler
  • Cooling Towers and associated Water Hygiene Systems

Skills & Experience:

Background

A confident and proactive engineer with experience operating in a manufacturing or FMCG or logistics environment. Ability to provide competent advice and support to the Company on legislative requirements while working with operational areas to ensure ongoing compliance.

Technical Experience

  • EITB / City & Guilds or equivalent time served in an Engineering Apprenticeship
  • Degree Qualified in an Engineering Discipline
  • IBD Fundamentals
  • IOSH Managing Safely
  • Technical Membership of Relevant Professional Body / Institute

Production Knowledge

  • Trained, competent and experienced in Permit to Work systems, risk assessments and method statements
  • Boiler Operations Management trained and competent in accordance with SAFED/HSE requirements
  • Ability to conduct training for Reliability topics
  • Competent user of maintenance management systems
  • Intermediate PC Skills: Formula and graphs in Excel, import photographs in PowerPoint, high standard of document production

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Responsible Person trained and competent in accordance with HSE document Legionnaires’ Disease ACoP (L8)
  • Maintaining awareness of current health, safety and environmental legislation and guidance to inform best practice

Main Responsibilities:

1. Safety

Ensure that all activities associated with Utilities usage, operation and maintenance are carried out in accordance with Company health and safety requirements, and in compliance with current legislation, maintaining a safe working environment for employees, contractors and visitors

The job holder will have a number of duties defined in legislative and guidance documents, such as:

Responsible Person for Legionella Control in accordance with the Legionnaires’ Disease ACoP (L8)

Competent Manager in accordance with the HSE publication Safe Management of Industrial Steam and Hot Water Boilers (indg436)

SAFED document Guidance on Safe Operation of Boilers Ref: BG01

Ensure that the department is active in achieving safety related improvement targets.

2. Expertise

Required areas of expertise will include:

  • Utilities Operations
  • Energy Management
  • Commercial Awareness
  • Budget & Cost Control

3. Working Together

The ability to work effectively in a team, with the ability to take on different roles, such as facilitator, coach and subject matter expert, is essential.

Key internal contacts will include the Site Engineering Manager, Manufacturing Planner, Facilities Engineer, Electricians & Fitters, as well as Production employees.

Key external contractors will include third part service providers and suppliers.
